Discovering God's Kingdom – Growing the Church

Counting our blessings

We may think and believe that we are truly hard done by at this time, but we are truly blessed in so many ways, but many more are not as fortunate:

  • If you own just one Bible, you are abundantly blessed. One third of the world does not have access to even one.
  • If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the million who will not survive the week.
  • If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 500 million people around the world.
  • If you attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death, you are more blessed that almost three billion people in the world.
  • If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of this world.
  • If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace, you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy.
  • If your parents are still married and alive, you are very rare.
  • If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful, you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not.
  • If you can hold someone's hand, hug them or even touch them on the shoulder, you are blessed because you can offer God's healing touch.
  • If you prayed yesterday and today, you are in the minority because you believe in God's willingness to hear and answer prayer.

Here are just three of God’s blessings for us – but there are many many more in the Bible – so please have a look for yourself:

Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Jeremiah 17: 7-8
Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.

Isaiah 41:10
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

So as we count our blessings, please do think about those who do not have as much as we do – and are not so blessed – and thank God for all his marvellous gifts.
